Dental Misconceptions4 Popular Dental Misconceptions

There are many dental misconceptions that can ultimately hinder your oral health. We’re here to clear up these myths so that you can maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.

Some of the most popular dental misconceptions include:

1. Brushing Harder Will Clean Your Teeth Better.

When it comes to brushing your teeth, brushing harder or more aggressively won’t lead to a more thorough clean. Instead, brushing too hard can wear down some of the enamel on your teeth and may even contribute to gum recession. So, stick to a soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Then, hold your toothbrush with only two fingers to prevent brushing too hard.

2. You Only Need To See a Dentist If You’re Having Problems With Your Teeth.

It’s important to visit your dentist twice per year for a routine cleaning, regardless of whether you currently have a dental problem. During your regular cleanings, your dentist can remove tartar from your teeth to prevent the buildup of bacteria. You can’t remove tartar on your own! Additionally, your dentist can identify potential problems in their early stages to prevent more serious dental issues in the future.

3. If Your Gums Are Bleeding, You Should Stop Flossing.

This dental misconception is the opposite of the truth! Bleeding gums are a sign of gingivitis, which is a mild stage of periodontal disease. If you notice that your gums are bleeding, you should diligently brush and floss every day to help keep your mouth clean. If the bleeding continues, schedule an appointment with your dentist ASAP.

4. As Long As I Have No Pain, My Teeth Are Healthy.

Typically, cavities don’t cause pain until they reach the severe stage. When you experience pain with a cavity, you may need more invasive treatment to remove the decayed portion of the tooth. So, it’s important to continue to see your dentist twice yearly, even if you have no pain in your teeth.
